Happy Father’s Day!

The U.S.’s concept of Father’s Day was sparked by a Mother’s Day sermon that inspired one Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. When Dodd heard this sermon in 1909, she thought of the support and love her father had given her. He sadly had passed away, but wanted to honor him similar to how Mother’s Day honors mother figures!

Dodd had begun to work with local townsman to create a celebration of fathers in June of 1910. June was selected because Dodd’s father was born June 5. Dodd originally wanted this celebration to take place on June 5, but the local townsfolk wouldn’t have been able to complete the celebration plans in such a short period. Thus the first ever Father’s Day was pushed back a couple weeks; it was celebrated on June 19, 1910. Father’s Day was eventually signed as an official government holiday in 1972 by Richard Nixon!

Similar to honoring mothers, Charley has depicted the strength and love fathers give their young ones. A lot of his pieces involving birds and their babies are actually male birds, as indicated by the respected species’ vibrant colors. While you take a look at some of Harper’s highlighted work, make sure to think of ways to honor the fathers, grandfathers, friends, and father-figure loved-ones today. We also send love out to families who’s father’s may no longer be able to celebrate with their families today. Everyone at Fab Frames wishes you all a happy and safe Father’s Day!
