Eat, Drink, and Be Scary! Halloween is Finally Here!

Orange you excited for Halloween?? Today is the day! Halloween is here! Let’s talk about our last Harper Halloween piece, Halloween: Scare and Be Scared:

Charley Harper’s Halloween: Scare and Be Scared

Yes, Jack-o’-Lantern Time Again was very spooky season appropriate, but Halloween: Scare and Be Scared takes the cake! This piece depicts three creeped out trick-or-treaters as they run through the Halloween night. They probably feel like someone is watching them because of all the creepy, glowing eyes in the pitch black background. Talk about a scary thought!

Harper really cranked up the spook factor to an eleven on this one as these youngsters run away in fear of the things that go bump in the night. He brilliantly personified the tree as it looks like it is reaching out to grab the frightened tricker-or-treaters.

Charley also uses a great deal of texture work to give this an eerie feel. The tree is blotched with black to help it seamlessly blend into the background while also standing out with its vibrant blue hue. The kids in the foreground have both solid, crisp lines, and some rough strokes in their costumes. Overall this piece has a gritty feel through the rough lines seen throughout the design.

The colors used in this piece are predominantly cool toned, but the red and the mustard colors help give to scene a bit of a pop (plus the scary, bright yellow eyes in the dark!).

Two siblings getting ready to go trick-or-treating

The origins of Halloween come from the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain where people used to dress in scary costumes to ward off the ghosts and spirits that drifted into this dimension from the other side. Eventually the Catholic Church started celebrating All Saints Day on Nov. 1st, making the day before All-Hallows-Eve. This eventually became known as “Halloween”. Throughout the years in the United States, the many different cultures began to intertwine with the original Celtic traditions to create a unique culture around Halloween, one closer to what we recognize today.

As you get ready tonight to spread joy, tricks, and candy, remember to have fun and stay safe! Everyone here at Fabulous Frames & Art wishes you all a very ooky spooky Halloween night.
